Tramlines festival – Sheffield music city 2010

Tramlines 2010

Tramlines 2010

23-25 July 2010

Our biggest musical weekend of the year, Sheffield music city, will soon be upon us. And the main part of that weekend will once again be the Tramlines festival.

Last year’s Tramlines was really good. The atmosphere around town was pretty special and even if you aren’t a music fan, it is worth popping down the the city centre over the weekend just to get a feel for what is going on.

As well as the big acts on the main stage, there are lots of smaller events happening at venues all over the city. The great thing is that it is a free festival and you do not need tickets for  events. You may have to queue up to get in to some venues or areas, but I think the plan is to have a one-in-one-out policy this year.

There have been various announcements regarding the line-up, and apparently there will be more news about who is playing on Monday.

For now, I’ve listed some of the information sources for the latest festival information:

Anyone know if they are producing a paper brochure/programme this year?

If you stumbled across this blog online then you may be interested to know that you can also follow it on Twitter and Facebook.

As well as the main blog posts, both of these sites have quick updates giving links to extra Sheffield bits and bobs on the internet and in the news that are of interest but I haven’t had time to do a proper blog post for.

Sheffield renewables

Developing renewable energy projects across Sheffield

If you’re concerned about maintaining a low carbon future for yourself and the city then Sheffield renewables will be of interest.

This volunteer-led organisation is launching community-funded renewable energy generation projects in and around Sheffield. They are encouraging people to adapt their lifestyles and adopt new technologies to drive the city towards a low carbon future in a way that will bring benefits to both Sheffield and its people.

One of their projects is a hydro power scheme at Kelham island and there are plenty of ways to get involved, whether it is through volunteering, investing or general support.

You can also keep in touch with Sheffield renewables via their website, email newsletterTwitter and Facebook.

Sheffield five-a-side world record attempt

30 hours of five-a-side football

A quick post to draw your attention to this world record attempt taking place in March in aid of Sport relief. The organisers hope to break the record for near-continuous five-a-side football and raise £30,000 for charity at the same time.

They aren’t looking for people to actually play the football, but there are plenty of ways to get involved so get in touch if you can offer people, expertise, equipment or sponsorship. You can follow the project at sheffieldfiveaside.co.uk and also on Twitter (@Sheffield5aside).

In the meantime, the athletes who are taking part in the actual footballing side of the event are continuing their training regime:

Off the shelf Sheffield 2009

The festival of reading and writing (10-31 October 2009)

Two of the city’s biggest cultural festivals return this autumn and by the look of the programmes, the line-ups this year are better than ever.

Off the shelf is 18 years old and features the usual selection of readings, workshops, exhibitions, storytelling, talks, walks and poetry. Looking over the festival programme, I’d defy anyone to find something that wasn’t of interest. Here are my picks:

  • Martin Bedford – an illustrated talk from the artist behind the iconic Leadmill poster artwork of the 1980s and 1990s, plus highly-tipped Sheffield band the Crookes are also playing
  • Vic Reeves – an insight into the mind of the comedian as he takes you through his latest book, a surreal encyclopaedia called Vic Reeves’ vast book of world knowledge
  • Peter Hook – Hooky, whose distinctive basslines were at the heart of both New order and Joy division’s distinctive sound tells the story of infamous Manchester nightclub the Hacienda. He is DJing afterwards too (hopefully not just pretending)
  • Stuart Maconie – broadcaster and writer who passed through Sheffield for his Pies and prejudice: in search of the north book and may further expand on his evaluation of the city, which was basically that we produce great pop music but bad pop music museums
  • Tony Benn – even if you don’t agree with his politics, you can be sure that the former Chesterfield MP will spark plenty of debate and perhaps offer insight into how Sheffield has changed from the socialist stronghold that it was for so long
  • Marina Lewycka – local author and Sheffield Hallam university who shot to fame with her debut novel A short history of tractors in Ukranian and I expect will be reading from her new book, We are all made of glue

The festival website is much improved this year (compared to last year’s token putting the festival programme online as a PDF) and there is a Twitter feed for the event, @otsfestival.

I’ll look at the picks from Grin up north in my next post.

Sheffield daily photo blog

A picture a day from the steel city

If you like photos of Sheffield then this new photo blog and Twitter account is worth following. It does what it says on the tin: each day a new photo of the city is posted with accompanying comments giving some background information and related links.

Recent entries have included Sheffield’s smallest hotel, The three tuns and a contrasting picture of Old and new Sheffield.

Many of the pictures appear to be taken on the move and for now they are being taken using a camera phone, although the person behind it says that a better camera will be used soon. Perhaps one day it could grow into some sort of collaborative effort?

Find it at sheffielddailyphoto.blogspot.com and @sheffieldphoto on Twitter.

Architectural tour of Sheffield

‘Sheffield just doesn’t seem to know how good it actually is’

People reading this blog who aren’t on Twitter may have missed the link posted at the end of last week to a great article on the Building Design website.

The author, Owen Hatherly, took a walk around the city for the magazine’s Urban trawl feature and the resulting article and follow-up blog post are well worth a read.

Eyebrows have been raised in the past in response to some of Sheffield’s planning decisions and buildings, however Owen recognises that our examples of post-war, modernist architecture are actually mostly better than what London has to offer.

Of course not everyone loves this style of building design, but reading his feature does make you look again at some of the city’s well-known landmark structures with a new appreciation.

Castle market is described as ‘a shopping centre with a weirdness and individuality that puts all the Arndales to shame’; the Manpower services building at Moorfoot and Jefferson Sheard’s electricity substation are ‘thrillingly paranoid Cold War megastructures’; and Park hill is labelled as ‘one of the great buildings of the century, anywhere – a truly astonishing architectural achievement’.

He also picks up on one of the reasons why local people have such affection for Sheffield: whichever way you look, the charming haphazard sprawl of the city is nearly always neatly framed by the beautiful surrounding countryside, which is only minutes away.

And his advice for ensuring that Sheffield remains such a unique place? We need to concentrate less on trying to be like everywhere else and spend more time celebrating the individuality of the city and its distinctive collection of buildings. With Sevenstone in the pipeline and Urban splash attempting a delicate balancing act with Park hill, this will no doubt prove quite a challenge.
